Flying too close to the sun might have been a problem for Icarus, but for today’s event videographers getting footage from a bird’s eye view is easier than ever. And that is good news for event planners and marketers because it can showcase their event from a fresh perspective, improving audience engagement and reach.

The popularity of aerial photography and videography has grown in recent years, and it may already be on your radar as you plan your next corporate event or outing. Even then, there may still be questions about the quality of footage, capabilities, and more. To help you along the way, the MCP team has put together some of the most frequently asked questions we encounter when drones are in the conversation.

At Mark Campbell Productions, we are committed to helping our partners get the most out of their events, through professional photography and videography. By leveraging the latest in technology, we can help shine the spotlight on your next Chicago, or Denver, event.

Drone Videography FAQs

When looking at the history of event videography and marketing, drones are still the New Kids On The Block. Having only been around for the past decade, many event marketers are reaching for the sky for the very first time. To help clear the air, we’ve answered some of the most common questions we encounter regarding adding drone videography to your next event strategy.

Does my event need to be large?

Negative ghost-rider! Drones can be used for any event. It doesn’t matter if you are having a small company event, or hosting a music festival at Red Rocks. What can change is how the drone will be used.

While it is true that drones are great for showcasing the size and scale of larger events, that is not their only use case. We’ve used them in smaller auditoriums to get a different perspective on guest speakers and crowd reactions.

Are drones only useful for outdoor events?

The simple answer – No. While drones are certainly more popular for outdoor events, with a careful pilot and plenty of planning, drones can be a great addition to your indoor event. Beyond the crowd, footage can highlight interior architecture, and be used to showcase the energy within the room.

Can drones be used in high winds?

“It’s not [just] the plane, it’s the pilot.” Forgive our riff on the latest Top Gun movie, but outdoor events in Chicago all have one thing in common – wind. Dealing with wind is the price of admission for drone pilots and videographers, but fear not.

Professional drone equipment is equipped with the latest technology to help ensure buttery smooth video quality, even if the wind is howling. This is in large part due to the addition of internal stabilizers and sensors, as well as increased speed. There is, however, a maximum wind that each can safely operate.

Will drone video quality be lower?

With drone footage, you don’t have to choose between flash or function – you can have both. Where amateur drone videographers might snap on a GoPro, we use the latest in video technology to make sure that each piece of footage is as high quality as possible.

Can drones livestream during an event?

Absolutely. Remember there are no points for second place, and livestreaming with a drone can get you to the head of the class. Admittedly, this is a relatively new component of aerial videography, but it can be a powerful addition to your marketing plan. We get goosebumps just thinking about a drone zooming overhead capturing the energy of a crowd.

Can multiple drones be used during an event?

Let us be the first to tell you that we like your style. Having multiple drones for your event is always a great option for a couple of reasons. First and foremost, more drones equals more footage, and more footage means more options for your marketing team during and after the event.

Additionally, even top-of-the-line drones have a limited battery life, so it is always a good idea to have a backup on hand. If both will be operational at the same time, careful planning is needed to make sure each piece of equipment has plenty of space to operate within.

Are drones dangerous?

They can be. Anytime you have spinning blades, and a piece of equipment that is capable of moving over 15mph, you have to be careful. That is why it is something that is best left to experts. Professional aerial videographers have the skills needed to fly the equipment and get the shot, and they are trained to handle adverse conditions to avoid any potential mishaps. Sometimes it pays to be more like Rooster, than Maverick.

What does it cost?

It is hard to put a definitive number on drone videography. Every event, and organization, has different needs and requirements. Rather than try to put a round number on it here, we would prefer to have a conversation to understand your goals and how drone footage can fit into it. From there we can give you a customized quote.
